Brè-Aldesago

Bre - Aldesago was from 1953 to 1972, the name of an independent political municipality in the canton of Ticino, in the district of Lugano east, in the district of Lugano in Switzerland. She went in 1972 in the city of Lugano on.

Today, the independent village until 1953 Bre (330 inhabitants) has mainly touristic reputation as an artist village, while as the residential area of Lugano Aldesago has its own character.

Location

Bre is located on a plateau at 800 m altitude below the Monte Bre summit (925 m), which is developed as a mountain of Lugano and vantage point with a funicular. From Lugano connect a road (about 9 km ) and hiking trails ( stair climb ) of Lugano and Lugano Cassarate Gandria the village with Lake Lugano approximately 500 m below.

History

Bre is first mentioned in 1280 under that name and in the 14th century under other name variations documented. Excavations ( necropolis ) place however is already close to a Roman or possibly even pre-Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages possessions are attested in Bre for the convent of San Abbondio as families in Como.

The Bre was dominated by livestock. In the second half of the 19th century this industry offered too few prospects, leading to a wave of emigration of the inhabitants as a mason or farmer especially in the United States and to South America by himself.

By 1912, Bre was accessible only by a mule path from Lugano. With the construction of the road and the Funicular (1912 finished) Bre was developed for tourism; A first hotel was built. In the following period of quiet place moved to its exposed position high above the lake numerous artists; the most famous among them was William Schmid, a painter of the New Objectivity, who spent his life in Bre and the place left behind his house as a museum after his death in 1971. Also, the Hungarian painter Jozeph Birò and Sarde Aligi Sassu spent their last artistic creation phase in Bre. End of the 19th century were born in Bre the self-taught painter Pasquale Gilardi and Luigi Taddei. Survivor Artist on site are of a graphic artist and sculptor Marco Prati, Antonio Scoppazini and theater director Michel Poletti.

The living conditions of the villagers were hard up to the middle of the 20th century. By 1950, Bre had no connection to the municipal water supply; Water had to be drawn from wells. Until about 1970, the cigarette smuggling was an active source of sideline.

Today, tourism is one of the most important sectors of the economy.

Attractions

  • The Parish Church of San Simone Fedele (reference to two martyrs from Como) is attested only in 1591, the Romanesque tower is, however, a much older origin.
