Brechin
Brechin (Gaelic: Breichin ) is a village in the Scottish unitary authority Angus. It lies about 10 km west of Montrose and 30 km northeast of Dundee on the River South Esk In 2001 Brechin recorded 7199 inhabitants.
History
Built in the Gothic style Cathedral of Brechin dates from the 13th century and includes one of only two preserved round towers from the 11th century in Scotland. About four kilometers northeast of the town was fought the battle of Brechin in 1452. In 1641 Brechin received the status of a Royal Burgh. Since 1825, the Distillery Tobermory produced in Brechin whiskey. With the former distillery Northport was 1820-1983 another distillery in the town.
Traffic
About the A90, which connects Edinburgh with Thurso and is tangent to the town in the north, Brechin is connected to the road network. Furthermore run the A933 ( Brechin - Arbroath ) and A935 ( Brechin, Montrose ) by Brechin. Between 1895 and 1981, Brechin was connected through the Caledonian Railway in the railway network, the station was abandoned. Since 1993, a heritage railway between Brechin and Bridge of Dun on the old route of the Caledonian Railway is operated during the summer months.
Sports
The football club Brechin City FC, founded in 1906, currently playing in the third Scottish Football League. Its home ground is Glebe Park, Brechin.
