Breckinridge County, Kentucky

Breckinridge County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hardinsburg, which was named after Captain William Hardin, one of the first settlers in the area. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in west-central Kentucky, is bordered to the northwest by the State of Indiana, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1517 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Meade County, Hardin County, Grayson County, Ohio County and Hancock County.

History

Breckinridge County was formed on December 9, 1799 from portions of Hardin County. It was named for John Breckinridge, a U.S. Senator and Attorney General of Kentucky.

According to the census of 2000, there were 18,648 people in Breckinridge County.
