Breganzona

Breganzona is a district of the city of Lugano in Lugano Circle West, in the district of Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino.

Geography

It is on a hill west of the core area of Lugano. Until the incorporation into the city of Lugano in 2004 it formed an independent political community. It included several fractions and the place Biogno. The former village had 2000 inhabitants in the year 4'782.

The former village is situated on the slope of a hill that rises from the Val d' Agno in the West, falls in the east to the basin of Cortivallo and in the south against the Lago di Muzzano.

History

Breganzona was first mentioned in 984 as Brianzona. In the 12th century, the monastery of Sant'Ambrogio Milan had land here. The inhabitants of both villages lived on viticulture, sheep and cattle farming, chestnut forests and sericulture. By 1890, there were 1,500 mulberry trees.

The 1022 first mentioned Biogno joined in 1925 Breganzona, while the fraction Mulini Bioggio came to church.

While Breganzano in 1950 had 883 inhabitants, it came from 1950 as agglomeration of Lugano to strong growth with a population increase of 73 percent. The hotel offer is part of the tourism infrastructure of Lugano. Verkehrlich Breganzona was previously developed by the trolleybus Lugano.
