Breitscheidplatz

The Breitscheidplatz located in Charlottenburg in Berlin's Charlottenburg -Wilmersdorf between Kurfürstendamm, Budapest street and Tauentzienstraße ( City West). Through the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, he is world renowned.

Location

East of the Europa-Center closes at approximately at the center stands the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and between the two there is the Weltkugelbrunnen. West of the square was 1960 to 2009 restricted by the building wing of the then " Schimmelpfeng house " across the street including extending Kant. Under the square which was built in 1902 will pan U2 of the Berlin U -Bahn from the Tauentzienstraße in a northwesterly direction to the Hardenberg road towards Bahnhof Zoo.

History

The Auguste -Viktoria -Platz was the western beginning of a series of boulevards and jewelry places, the so-called " Generalszugs ". Originally was also the Kurfürstendamm over the place.

From 1889 was the previously unnamed space after the inventor of printing with cast letters Gutenbergplatz and was then renamed in 1892 after the German Empress Auguste -Viktoria -Platz. After the Second World War, he was then named after the persecuted by the Nazis Socialists Rudolf Breitscheidstraße on 31 July 1947.

In the same style as the recently built memorial church two opposing buildings, according to which " Romanesque House " called themselves created. 1896, the senior on the west side of the square was completed ( between Kurfürstendamm and Kant street ), 1899, the competitor on the east side (now the Europa Centre ) relate a very similar house. The second, however, was world-famous, because here in 1916, the " Romance Café" opened. The ensemble was also called " Romanesque Forum ".

During World War II, not only the Church but also the peripheral development was severely destroyed. During reconstruction, the appearance was greatly changed by the ideas of the 1950s. The former concept envisaged a dominant role in car traffic. Between Memorial Church, Europa Center, an important main route was performed ( the so-called " buckle "). This could lead the vehicles crossing-free in the Budapest street, a road tunnel was created.

In 1978 was begun with an improvement in the use and quality of stay. The divisive road connection from the Europa Centre was closed and replaced by a pedestrian area, so that the space along the Tauentzienstraße is continuously passable. The space consumed by the Budapest street and the northern "Bikini House" separating road tunnel was filled in 2006.

Future

Planning the remodeling of the square and the surrounding area were coordinated in a separate plan workshop. Through these structural measures, which were completed in the spring of 2006, the place got a new paving, lighting and landscaping. Further changes are imminent with the new buildings on the west side.
