Bremen Institute for Applied Beam Technology

The Bremen Institute of Applied Beam Technology GmbH (BIAS ) is a laser technology focused, individual economic research and development institute. On 1 July 1977, was founded by Gerd Sepold and Werner Jüptner as the first non-university Laser Institute in Europe.

Organization

The BIAS has about 70 employees, of which about 40 academics and 19 technicians and master. In addition, research assistants, visiting scholars and others ( 2008)

The BIAS is supported by a limited company, which since the beginning has non-profit status. The Institute was established as a technology transfer company; from the beginning it had customers in the industry. The public sector, the state of Bremen, the German Research Foundation, the federal government and other funding agencies fund the initial research.

The VFwF (Association for the Promotion of Scientific Research in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen eV ), bundles of non-university research institutions in the state of Bremen, in 1985 shareholders. The fact that the two heads of BIAS are appointed professors of the University of Bremen in 1989, underlines the close cooperation between the Research Institute and the University of Bremen in research and teaching.

Work areas

In the fields of laser-based material processing and optical metrology which BIAS carries out research on their own projects, collaborative projects and on a contract basis, developments for customers of the economy and the public sector as well as contract work for clients as research lead to in-house production.

The BIAS and new technologies for metal compound with the help of laser technology were made, which are called Schwöten and have gained particular importance in shipbuilding and aircraft.
