Bremer County, Iowa

The Bremer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 24,276 inhabitants and a population density of 21.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Waverly.

Geography

The County is located in the central northeastern Iowa and has an area of 1,139 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Bremer County was born on January 24, 1853 as a free designated - formed territory - but in reality populated by Indians. It was named after the Swedish author and suffragist Fredrika Bremer ( 1801-1865 ). Thus, the Bremer County is the only one in Iowa, which was named after a person from the literature.

The existing since 1850 Waverly City was the first county seat, which has, in contrast to many other counties in Iowa never changed.

The first courthouse, a small one-story house was built in 1851. 1858 this was replaced by a larger brick building. Since this building was no longer able to gradually grown tasks in 1870 another building was erected next to it. Both buildings were demolished in 1937 and a larger building erected in its place.

In 1975, the Sheriff's Office and the prison was moved into its own building.
