Overview of the Zoo at the Sea

The Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven is a Themenzoo specializing in water- living animal species, and Nordic. It is located directly on the dike of the river Weser near the Great Lighthouse at historic New Harbor. It is the smallest public zoo in Germany.

History

What began with a North Sea Aquarium 1912/13 - it had 30 display tanks and was established in the basement of the hall at the beach Weserdeich - was continued on June 24, 1928 with the opening of " animal caves ". North of the beach hall in the outer dike area of ​​the zoo with cages, aviaries, hot houses, pools and saltwater aquariums was created.

After a renovation in 1976 followed in 2000, a temporary resting for a redesign of the entire system. With the new name " Zoo am Meer " is on 27 March 2004, a plant was opened, the animals shows in a natural environment. The focus continues to be on marine life, however, with only a few fish and crustaceans.

Zoo today

Spacious enclosures without bars and pools with large lenses enable observation of the animals in both elements. The collection includes about 280 animals in 47 species specializing on aquatic life and Nordic animal species, including polar bears, gannets, seals and the endangered Humboldt penguins to their offspring sought the zoo. In addition to the marine animals are more interesting for children animal species such as chimpanzees, cougars and the curious kea part of the species spectrum.

The Zoo at the Sea, is particularly adapted to its main target group, families with young children. He therefore also a large playground with pirate ship to climb and petting. A special feature is still the viewing platform that allows an overview of the Weser estuary and the observation of transient ships. The visitor can then not only deal with sea creatures, but also at the same time look at their habitat. Hence the name " Zoo am Meer ".

After 41 years without polar bears offspring, the polar bear females Valeska brought on December 16, 2013 two boy into the world, of which but one was found dead. Out of concern for the remaining boy the people of Bremerhaven and their guests were invited by both the Zooleitung as well as of politics to ignite no New Year's Eve fireworks in the vicinity of the year 2013/14. The adjoining Willy -Brandt-Platz has been temporarily locked for this reason.
