Brendan Smith (politician)

Brendan Smith (Irish Breandán Mac Gabhann, born June 1, 1956 in Cavan ) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and, since May 8, 2008 Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Biography

Smith was initially public sector employees and consultants last of ministers. His own political career began in 1992 as a candidate of the Fianna Fáil with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). He represents the constituency of Cavan - since Monaghan.

In September 2004, he was Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. As part of a government reshuffle Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Bertie Ahern appointed him on 20 June 2007 Minister of State with special responsibility for Children with cabinet rank.

After Brian Cowen 2008 became prime minister on May 7, this summoned him in the cabinet formation to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
