Brenham is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Washington County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on U.S. Highway 290, about 120 kilometers northwest of Houston and has a total area of 22.7 km ², without significant water surface.

History

Established was the place as Hickory Grove, but was renamed in 1843 in Brenham, in honor of Richard Fox Brenham, a physician and member of several expeditions Texas. In February 1844, the city was chosen as the seat of county government. Two years later, the first post office was opened and the construction of the Washington County Railroad in 1860 Brenham became a trade hub of the area. The median income for a household was $ 32,198, and the median income for a family $ 41,486. Males had a median income of $ 31,133 versus $ 22,152 for females.
