Theological influences

Childs has been heavily influenced by Karl Barth and Hermann Gunkel's form-critical view of biblical texts.

Childs contribution to theological science

Childs is primarily known for his pioneering work in the field of canonical exegesis ( "canonical criticism" ), a form of understanding of the Bible or the biblical hermeneutic that takes the text of the Bible seriously in its final stage. Childs himself was not a friend of these terms ( " canonical interpretation ", " canon criticism ", etc.), because he was convinced that his approach opened up a completely new approach, which replace the whole historical-critical method. Childs put his approach in 1970 is in his work Biblical Theology in Crisis and turned him in 1979 in the book Introduction to the Old Testament as Scripture. The latter was "one of the most discussed books of the 1980s ."

Christopher Seitz turned on the assertion that "Professor Childs larger and lasting changes in the conceptual framework of modern biblical research led to single-handedly by, he relied on the presentation of biblical writings in the canon and on the theological implications when noticed their final form.
