Brevik

Brevik was a town with about 2,700 inhabitants in the south of the county of Telemark in southern Norway. It was incorporated as of January 1, 1838 independent within the meaning of formannskapsdistrikt of 1837 and on January 1, 1964 in which about ten kilometers north location, much larger municipality Porsgrunn.

The place is located at the southern end of the Eidanger ( Eidangerhalvøya ) peninsula, which bisects a fjord. The Old Norse form of the name was Breidvik, where the first element breiðr as much as "wide " means and the ending Vik " inlet " is.

Brevik is regarded as one of the best preserved cities from the days of sail and used to export center for ice and wood. The last timber supply in the United Kingdom dates back to about 1960.

The term Brevik came in March 2012 in the German and Norwegian headlines when in Chemnitz, a business is popular with the neo-Nazi fashion brand Thor Steinar Brevik opened under the name, supposedly the name of the city. Reason for the attention was the similarity to the names Breivik, the author of the attacks in Norway, 2011. Having strong public protests had called for a closure of the store, it was renamed by the holders of one week after the opening.
