Børglum Abbey

Børglum Monastery is a former monastery in northern Jutland in Denmark, which is now used as a farm.

Location

The monastery is located 4.9 km east of loekken, a small fishing village in the Jammer bay on the North Sea coast. It also includes the free commune in this town. The eponymous village Børglum turn is about 2.42 kilometers east of the plant.

The building was built on a hill, so you can already see from a distance. Due to this exposed location, it is possible to see from the crest of the sea 3.6 km away.

Close to the monastery there is a small lake.

Plant

The system currently consists of four buildings. Upon arrival at the monastery leads first of all by a gatehouse to a large open courtyard, from which one has a wide view over the countryside. At this place are the stables. As you keep walking, you pass a portico and reached the courtyard of the monastery, which is surrounded by the main house and the connected church. History

The Monastery of Børglum was first attested as a royal residence in 1086, after the king was forced to flee the Holy Knut after a popular uprising.

Around 1100 silted up the western end of the Limfjord. As a result, it was decided to relocate the bishopric of Vestervig on the Thy to Børglum. This happened in the year 1130. Five years later the monastery was officially handed over to the diocese Børglum and at the same time the seat of the bishop. Before 1176 Bishop called Tuco I. Premonstratensian from Steinfeld, who formed from then on the cathedral chapter. The bishop was from then on at the same time abbot of the monastery, which was headed by a provost. The Canons initiated the monastery at least until the incorporation of the bishopric in the diocese of Aalborg ( 1554 ). They expanded the building in 1190 for a further sofa wing, so that it could accommodate more people.

The religious led the monastery Børglum in the "golden era " and reached a very large abundance of power. At times, included more than 47 manors or farms dependent on the influence of the monastery. The started at 1220/30, Romanesque cathedral was never completed.

The last Catholic bishop of Børglum was Stygge Krumpen. He was regarded as very self-centered and did not care much for the precepts of chastity and celibacy. Along with his beloved, he moved soon after taking office, in his opinion, the more comfortable castle Voergård. When the Reformation in 1539 reached North Jutland, he was due to his strict faith, he did not want to adapt to the new regulations, was arrested. The monastery was founded in 1669 by Peder Reedtz, the first private owner, acquired and subsequently converted into a farm. To date, it is privately owned.

Between 1750 and 1754, the plant was modernized by architect Lauritz de Thurah. She was doing some baroque style elements. ( Thurahs father was at that time master of the house of the monastery. )

The owners of the monastery today include lands with a total area of 445 hectares.

Church

Beginning of the 13th century, around 1215, began at the monastery with the construction of a church. The church, which soon received the name " Dom", the Virgin Mary was consecrated.

The church is located at the herb garden and the courtyard from foot traffic. Today, it is the parish church of the parish Børglum.

  • Legend has it that the minions of the Bishop those ships that had accrued before the coast, plundering and killing the crew. This had been a good source of income. The monastery at the present time

Today, the former monastery is open to the public in part. It houses an extensive museum in the old clothes, medieval appliances, a wine cellar, certificates, and reconstructed rooms from the period around 1900 ( as kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom) can be visited. Is particularly proud of a room in which Hans Christian Andersen has stayed during one of his many trips. In the stables there is a permanent exhibition of about 15 old coaches.
