Brian Stemmle

Brian Stemmle ( born October 12, 1966 in Toronto, Ontario) is a former Canadian alpine skier. He specializes in the disciplines of downhill and Super -G.

Biography

The two- years younger brother of Karen Stemmle was taken in winter 1984/85 in the Canadian national team and won this season's downhill standings of the Nor- Am Cup. World Cup points he won for the first time on March 3, 1985, when he surprisingly went to third place in the Super G in Furano. Stemmle could establish themselves near the top of the world, another third place was added on the Saslong in Val Gardena, on 12 December 1987.

On January 13, 1989, he suffered at the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel a serious accident. In the steep slope exit the Streif, a ski caught in the safety net. Stemmle crashed and suffered a broken pelvis and a twisted bowel. He was three months in hospital and had to then undergo a 18-month rehabilitation. The efficiency of the safety nets had been challenged before the race of the coaches and Stemmle sued the organizing committee successfully for damages.

The comeback in late 1990 was a success. Stemmle won at the Pan American Games in Las Lenas and also found the connection to the world class again. The years 1993-1995 were marked by rather moderate performance in the World Cup, but in the 1992/93 season he won for the second time the downhill standings of the Nor- Am Cup. At the World Championships in 1996 in the Sierra Nevada, he was fifth in the downhill. His best World Cup result he achieved on 2 February 1996, second in the Kandahar downhill in Garmisch -Partenkirchen.

Stemmle stepped back end of the 1998/99 season. Four times he took part in the Olympic Winter Games, the best result in 1998 was the twelfth place in the Super G.
