Bribir, Å ibenik-Knin County

Bribir is a village in the Šibenik -Knin, southern Croatia, about 15 kilometers northeast of the town of Skradin. Next to the village, on a high plateau, there is a well-known late medieval place called Bribirska glavica.

In ancient Illyrian times founded the settlement developed later than Varvaria, a Roman municipium. The Croats settled in the ruins of the municipium in the 7th century and named it Bribir.

The history of the town reached its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the then most powerful Croatian family Šubić in Bribir had its headquarters. The members of the family bore the title Prince of Bribir and were the Bane ( viceroys ) of Croatia. They built a palace on Bribirska glavica, an ideal place from which one could exercise control over the surrounding area. Today, only the foundations of the palace are preserved.
