Briceni District

The Raion is a raion in Moldova Briceni. The Rajonshauptstadt is Briceni.

Geography

The Rajon Briceni located in the extreme northwest of the country on the border with Ukraine and Romania. Along the border with Romania passes the Prut. The neighboring districts are within Moldova Rajon Edineţ and Rajon Ocniţa.

History

The Rajon Briceni has existed since 2003. Until February 2003, the area belonged to the now defunct county Edineţ ( Judeţul Edineţ ).

Population

Demographics

1959 77 846 inhabitants lived in what is now Rajons. Up to 85 395 from 81 403 in 1970, about 82 395 in 1979 in 1989 until 2004, as in all of Moldova decreased the population of the Rajons that below the value of that year: In the following decades, the population steadily increased. 1970 and fell only 78 027, respectively.

Ethnic groups

According to the 2004 census put the Moldovans with 70.6 % the proportionally largest ethnic group in Rajon Briceni, followed by Ukrainians 25.6 %, which is well above the national share of 8.4 %. Smaller minorities form the Russians with 2.6% and 0.4% with the Romanians and the Bulgarians and Gagauz, each with 0.1%.
