Bridge City is a city in Orange County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States. The city's motto is since 1995 Building Bridges Together.

Geography

The city lies at the intersection of Texas State Routes 73/87 and Highway 1442, about 40 km southeast of Beaumont in southern Orange County, 2 km north of Sabine Lake, which connects to the Gulf of Mexico and is in the east about 8 km from the border with Louisiana. It has a total area of 14 km ², of which 0.6 km ² water surface. The city borders are north of the Neches River and east of the Cow Bayou. The distance to Houston in the west is about 180 km.

History

The first settlers in this area arrived shortly before the founding of the Republic of Texas. Was founded as a place of Prairie View, according to its location at the beginning of the prairie behind the coastal strip. 1936, work began on the construction of an iron bridge over the Neches River on the highway, 20 km away to the Port Arthur that connected the two cities and with Interstate 10. The city, which is accessible by three other bridges from the east and north, was therefore known as the Bridge City and renamed a few years later to that name. The first post office was opened in 1940.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,651 people in 3,195 households and 2,476 families. The population density was 649.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 95.43 % White, 0.20 % African American, 0.75 % Native American, 1.40 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.27 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 0.89% were of mixed descent, and 3.57 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,195 households, 36.7 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.0 % were married couples living together. 10.6% were single mothers and 22.5 % were non-families. 19.6 % of all households were single-person households and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size amounted to 3.07.

27.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 % from 18 to 24, 28.2% 25-44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.3 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 93.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 42,045, and the median income for a family $ 49,750. Males have a median income of $ 42,398 versus $ 22,674 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,290. 10.3 % of the population and 7.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 13.1 % have children under the age of 18 and 12.8 % of those 65 or older.
