Briefzentrum (Deutsche Post)

A mail center (BZ ) is a set up by the Deutsche Post AG distribution for letters. It serves mainly to rationalization of letter delivery. The distribution system handles 65 million letters a day from 140,000 mailboxes across Germany.

History

Until the 1990s, Germany had 1,000 mail processing sites.

As part of the concept " letter 2000 ' 1993 five-digit zip codes, the letter sizes were introduced on July 1, standardized and built mail centers. In December 1998, the last in Regensburg was put into operation. This means that all 83 designated mail centers were built. On 28 November 2003, the mail center 42 (Wuppertal) was closed after infighting between the BZ management and the works council. Since there are only 82 mail centers.

Sizing

The letter centers are divided into sizes after processing their daily letters:

  • S 450000-750000 letters
  • M with 750000-1500000 letters
  • L with 1500000-2250000 letters
  • XL 2250000-3000000 letters
  • XXL 3000000-4500000 letters
  • IPZ with 3000000-5000000 letters (International Mail Centre )

List of mail centers

The following list gives the size stand in introducing the postal centers again. Since the 2010s, the capacity has been increased by recent placing machines. So the FC Kempten S, for example, went up to M.

Hardware

Generally

  • Semi-automated mail organizing hall ( Tabo ) for manual format separation and manual stamping of large and oversize letters as well as for the automatic separation and alignment of postcards, standard and compact letters ( SKBf ).
  • Installation and stamp machines (AM) for the detection of postage (including authenticity verification of stamps), aligning the letters in a single location and stamped with the date stamp.
  • Standard letter sorting ( SSA), for the automatic sorting of SKBf. This system consists of several address reading machine (ALM ) video coding (VCM ), integrated reading and video coding ( ilvM ) and fine sorting machines (FSM ).
  • Delivery sequence sorting machine ( GFSM ) for sorting SKBf point sequence.
  • Large letter sorting (GSA ) for the automatic sorting of large letters.
  • Image management module (IMM ) is a computer system for additional processing of the images generated by ALM, VCM, ilvM, and GSA. On the one hand this system is increased by the read rate in the reading of the machine's own computers (OCR ) is not read addresses yet another reading computers (secondary readers ) are fed. If these secondary readers also achieving any result, the pictures on the so-called video coding are displayed on monitors and entered the code manually. Furthermore, this system is used to determine other information, such as the recognition of nachzusendenden letters and the review of specific types of postage such as Internet brand.

In large mail centers is also available:

  • Conveying and distribution system with unloading (EV), conveyor ( Föa ) and picking system ( KoA ) for transporting the mail containers from the hangar doors to the individual processing areas and back.
  • Maxi letter-sorting ( MSA).

Technical modernization

  • After extensive testing in BZ 04 Leipzig began in 2009 to replace the previous SSA machines ALM, VCM, ilvM and FSM by a new generation of ilvM, which is characterized by higher throughput, higher read rate and less stress to the letters. The machine has 128 bins ( "old" ilvM maximum of 24 subjects), a subsequent fine sorting machine (FSM ) is therefore no longer necessary. Furthermore, it is possible with this machine also has a delivery sequence sorting.
  • End of 2009, the exchange of flats sorting began with a new generation of machines which can sort large shipment sizes and delivery sequence sorting allows.

Exemplary features of the BZ Erfurt

The BZ Erfurt was taken in October in 1996. The supply area of the routing region 99 is approximately 6,400 square kilometers with approximately 507,000 households. The maximum number of letters per day is 2.2 million pieces. Of technical equipment is available:

  • Two integrated reading and video coding ( ilvM ) with four video coding
  • Three fine sorting machine (FSM )
  • Two flats sorting (GSA )
  • Two Installation and stamp machines (AM)
  • Eight delivery sequence sorting machines ( GFSM )

According to the above-mentioned modernization equipment in Erfurt BZ99 looks like this:

  • Three integrated reading and video coding ( ILVneu )
  • A large letter sorting ( GSAneu )
  • Two Installation and stamp machines (AM)
  • Eight delivery sequence sorting machines ( GFSM )

Shifts

  • Late shift - mail center output processing ( BZA ): Monday to Friday in the afternoon to evening hours (in some sorting centers - Sunday BZ - even on a Sunday afternoon ), the been delivered within the routing region correspondence ( from mailbox emptying, post offices and agencies, and major customers ) sorted on routing regions.
  • Night shift - mail center input processing ( BZE): Mondays to Saturdays in the night to early morning hours, the letters, which are delivered by the other mail centers on delivery district ( = zip code), sorted to carrier routes, or even point sequence are.
  • Day shift: Monday to Saturday, the day programs of longer duration (books and merchandise deliveries, press services, InfoPost ) are sorted similar to BZE.

Thus, the letter centers are almost around the clock in operation.

Curiosities

  • The mail center (65 ) Wiesbaden is located in Mainz- Kastel district. Mainz -Kastel ( zip code 55252 ) but is supplied by mail on the mail center Mainz 55 in Mainz- Hechtsheim, so the mail for Mainz -Kastel is not sorted in the "own" BZ. But in order to get the question put to the BZ 65 mail not only in a roundabout way, the BZ 65 65212 with its own ( wholesale ) zip code.
  • The situation is similar with the BZ 10 (Berlin Center ), which has its location in a part of Berlin, which is part of the routing region 12.
