Briey

Briey ( German outdated: Brieg in Lorraine ) is a commune with 5730 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle in the Lorraine region. The town is the administrative center for the district of Briey, capital of Canton Briey and seat of the Municipal Association Pays de Briey. The inhabitants of Briey be called Briotins.

Location

Briey is located northwest of Metz, in an industrial region. Basis of industrial settlements were the iron ore deposits in the Basin of Briey. The industrial region Hagondange - Briey had in the 1970s, more than 130,000 inhabitants, but the number fell to 112,000 by 1990.

The medieval Upper Town, Briey skin, towers over the lower city, Briey -Bas, which lies on the banks of Woigot. These two districts are connected by the garden -lined Grand Rue. The district of Briey -en- Forêt was created in the 1960s, the Cité Radiant City of Le Corbusier.

Briey is a major transportation hub. From here, major roads lead to Metz, Jarny, Longwy and Longuyon, Verdun, Thionville and after Luxembourg and the Ardennes ( Sedan, Charleville- Mézières ).

History

The city's name has its origins in Celtic word briga (fortress). The Castle of the Counts of Bar was first mentioned in 1076. The city rights were granted in 1263.

Briey was set in 1369 by the Metzern on fire, taken in 1475 by Charles the Bold, 1591 destroyed by the Protestants and 1635 by the Swedes.

From 1800 to 1871 Briey sub-prefecture was (administrative seat of an arrondissement ) in the department of Moselle. The district remained in France, than the rest of the department came to Germany by the Treaty of Frankfurt, and the département of Meurthe -et -Moselle was incorporated.
