Brigadoon is a screen adaptation of the Broadway musical from 1954. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring was played by Gene Kelly.

Action

The two Americans, Tommy and Jeff come at a hunting trip in Scotland in a small village called Brigadoon. This idyllic nest and its inhabitants appear only once every 100 years for a day, then they disappear again. As the two friends arrive, a magnificent wedding is celebrated straight. Tommy falls in love with the beauty of Fiona. His friend Jeff encouraged him to come back home with the hectic New York, Tommy is torn, because can leave Fiona the village not, it would be destroyed. Tommy could stay but that love would make it possible.

Jeff persuades Tommy with a list to leave Brigadoon and yet to come back to New York. After a few months they meet again, but both have evolved to their disadvantage: Jeff drinks, and Tommy can only longing to Fiona think and finds it difficult to live his life. The friends return to Scotland, but the village has disappeared.

Tommy bemoans his fate, but suddenly appeared Brigadoon yet again in front of them, the love Tommy's makes it possible. He moved to the village and disappears with him, Jeff remains.

Background

The template for the film delivered the Broadway musical Brigadoon, that premiered in 1947. The music was written by Frederick Loewe, plot and text submitted by Alan Jay Lerner. The two formed a team since 1942 and were also able to celebrate together later successes, for example, with their musical My Fair Lady.

For the filming actually the musical star Howard Keel was provided for the lead role of Tommy Albright, the choice was then but Gene Kelly, who was also responsible for the choreography of the film is characterized with Cheryl Crawford.

Awards

The film was nominated for three Oscars in 1955, but did not win. The nominations accounted for Irene Sharaff for Best Costume Design, Wesley C. Miller for the best sound and Cedric Gibbons, F. Keogh Gleason, Edwin B. Willis and E. Preston Ames for Best Production Design. At the Golden Globes 1955 the cameraman Joseph Ruttenberg received the award for best cinematography in a color film.
