Brille

The Scutum ocular ( eye-pieces short, the Latin plural Ocularia ), also Ocularschuppe or shield, are at Schuppenkriechtieren ( Squamata ) groups of horny scales, which are arranged around the eye.

The name of this group is a composite of the name " Oculus " for the eye and the respective specific positional relationship:

  • The Präocularen are located directly in front of the eye.
  • The Postocularen located directly behind the eye.
  • The Supraocularen lie above the eye. You can be greatly enlarged or fragmented in several small scales. In many coils forming characteristic horns or other structures.
  • The Subocularen below the eyes and come in many snakes on the Supralabialen to.

All eye-pieces together form the circumorbitalen ring and are therefore also referred to as Circumorbitalia. As with all other head signs are in line Systematics their number, shape, size and training is an important determining feature.

Glasses

The outer part of the eye, the cornea or cornea, with all snakes, many lizards and some fish from a rigid, transparent scale covering the so-called glasses. This membrane is formed during embryogenesis from fusion of upper and lower eyelid and protects the eye from drying and mechanical stress (especially in subterranean forms). Between glasses and cornea a container filled with tears gap is ( subspektakulärer space ), which is connected via a channel to the throat in conjunction.

With the whole horny part of the skin and the cornea and the glasses are skinned. The molt is preceded by a mucilaginous molting cells between old and new skin, resulting in snakes to a bluish haze and discoloration of the eyes. A few days before the molt, the eyes are clear again. The spectacle is also referred to as " tertiary glasses" in distinction to the " primary spectacles" ( transparent integument over the cornea) cyclostomes and amphibians larvae and the " secondary glasses" many fish (outer, stationary corneal layer), which are not to their homologous.

It is possible that by interfering with the molting remains of the old glasses remain ( " impacted glasses "). This may not be deducted, but must be carefully removed by rinsing, as this can lead to irreversible damage to the eye otherwise.
