Brilliant Blue FCF (FCF " for coloring food" ) is a blue triphenylmethane dye, the as a food color ( E 133 ) is used.

Properties

Brilliant Blue FCF is a reddish - blue powder which is water soluble and stable when exposed to heat and light. With decreasing pH, the dye is decomposed, whereby the coloring π -electron system is shortened. Thus, the color changes from blue to green to propose first and then to yellow. If the pH value further to brilliant blue decolorized completely. The neutral solution, has an absorption maximum at lambda max. = 630 nm

Production

Brilliant Blue FCF is a synthetic dye. It is an anionic triphenylmethane consisting of 2 - sulfobenzaldehyde and 3 - {[ ethyl ( phenyl) amino] methyl} benzenesulfonic acid is prepared:

In trading is the disodium salt. And the calcium, ammonium, [ CAS: 2650-18-2 ] and potassium salt [ CAS: 71701-18-3 ] and the aluminum coating of the dye is allowed.

Use

Brilliant Blue is used for coloring drinks, jello, candied fruit, canned food, snack foods, sauces and condiments, cheese rind and sausage casings, especially in the U.S.. It is water soluble and is usually cleared rapidly from the body.

In order to achieve green, violet or brown tones, brilliant blue FCF is used in mixtures with other dyes, eg in conjunction with tartrazine (E 102) to generate different shades of green, such as with wasabi.

Brilliant Blue FCF is also used in liquid surfactant products ( liquid detergent, fabric softener ) and mouthwash, gel toothpaste and alcohol-based perfumes.

Health aspects

Brilliant Blue FCF is considered safe. As permitted daily dose of 0.1 mg / kg body weight were determined. The largest part of the dye is excreted unchanged.

Through animal experiments it was shown that Brilliant Blue can be deposited when taking in extremely high doses in kidney and lymph vessels.

Legal situation

Brilliant Blue FCF is only approved for certain products. These include:

  • Edible coatings for cheese and sausage ( qs )
