Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens, BWV 148

Bring to the Lord glory due his name ( BWV 148) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it in Leipzig for the 17th Sunday after Trinity, probably September 19, 1723.

Emergence and words

Bach wrote the cantata probably 1723 in his first year in Leipzig for the 17th Sunday after Trinity, 19 September 1723. Prescribed readings are Ephesians 4:1-6 and Luke 14.1 to 11 LUT LUT, the healing of a man with dropsy on the Sabbath. However, the cantata is not related to healing, but to the honor due to God on the Sabbath. The text of the opening chorus is Ps 29.2 LUT. The cantata is based on a poem in six stanzas, way, her earthly shops, the Picander 1725 in his first published collection of spiritual edifying thoughts. Alfred Dürr still sees reasons to date the cantata in 1723 and considers it possible that the cantata text preceded the poem.

Scoring and structure

In keeping with the festive theme, the cantata is scored rich, it music two soloists, alto and tenor, four-part choir, trumpet, three oboes, two violins, viola and basso continuo.

Music

The opening chorus begins with an instrumental Sinfonia. The choir sings two joints on various topics, both of which are derived from the beginning of the Sinfonia. The trumpet plays in the joints, a fifth voice. The movement ends with a chorus installation in the Sinfonia.

In the first aria the solo violin illustrates both the joy of the Lord and the ropes that is mentioned in the text. The alto recitative is accompanied by strings. In the following aria the almost mystical union of the soul with God through an unusual line-up with two oboe d' amore and oboe da caccia expressed. The final chorale is in four parts.
