Brinje

Brinje ( " Bruendl " ) is a municipality in Lika -Senj in Croatia.

Location

It is located about 85 km from Gospic, in the historic region of Lika. According to the 2011 census Brinje has 3,256 inhabitants, of which 93 % are Croats.

History

The story Brinjes dated to the Middle Ages when the town belonged to the noble families of Frankopan and Gorjanski was. The village lies on the already built by Romans salt road that leads from Senj on the Vratnik Pass and into the interior.

The village is located below the castle, first mentioned in 1343 Sokolac in which one of the best-preserved Gothic castle chapels located in Croatia. The Chapel of St. Mary dates from the 14th century. The castle name comes from the Croatian word " sokol " ( " Falcon " ) which is also a component of the coat of arms.
