Brit shalom (naming ceremony)

Brit Shalom ( Covenant of Peace ), also known as brit milah b'li, chayim brit, brit tikkun, called brit ben or "alternative Brit " (English), is a ceremony of naming for Jewish boys. Activists want to replace Mila ( circumcision) by this new ceremony, the Brit.

The first known Brit Shalom ceremony was performed according to a Zelebrantin around 1970 by Rabbi Sherwin Wine, founder of the " Society for Humanistic Judaism " ( an organization of Jews who reject faith in God).

There are different forms of design of Brit Shalom; part is a central component of foot washing. Is performed the Brit Shalom by a rabbi or an experienced layman. Most Brit Shalom Celebrants is available in the United States. They have different settings for this ritual and circumcision. Some celebrants belong to the anti - circumcision movement. Other celebrants perform the ritual, but this are reserved about. The Reform rabbi and Brit Shalom Celebrant Jerry Levy notes critically that Brit Shalom particularly like parents with weaker Jewish identity. He sees the rejection of circumcision as part of a "dilution" of Judaism.

In the German circumcision debate in 2012 alleged non-Jewish opponents of Jewish infant circumcision in some Jewish communities in Britain was Brit Shalom " common practice ". A representative of the " Board of Deputies of British Jews ," the Jewish umbrella organization of the country, described this claim as " complete nonsense "; similarly remarked the local president of the Movement for Reform Judaism. Parents who decide against circumcision, according to Rabbi Jonathan Romain are a "small minority" mostly mixed religious couples where one partner is against circumcision. According to a supporter of the secular- humanistic Judaism nearly 50 alternative ceremonies are conducted by the Commission annually. According to an estimate of the " Board of Deputies of British Jews" there were in 2011 at least 3860 Jewish births in the UK; the actual number could be even higher.
