British Empire Medal

The British Empire Medal (English: Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service, short British Empire Medal or BEM) is a British Medal of Honor, which is awarded for civilian or military services that deserve the recognition of the crown. The medal is awarded again in the UK after a break since 1993 from 2012. In the meantime, it was reserved only some members of the Commonwealth such as the Bahamas and the Cook Islands. The medal, which was awarded in 1917 for the first time, will be granted in 2012 in recognition of services to the local community. It is expected that the medal, which is awarded by the Lord Lieutenant, will receive about 300 people per year.
