The Brocken Railway Station is the terminal station at the summit of the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, Saxony -Anhalt. He is the end point of the run by the Harz narrow gauge railways Brockenbahn.

Location

The, also called Brocken Railway Station Railway Station is just a few meters below the Brocken summit at an altitude of 1125 meters. He is the highest railway station in Germany, which is traversed by a pure adhesion railway.

History

The opening of the line to the Brocken was performed on 4 October 1898. The station building was built in 1924 created from granite stones. First place, due to the difficult weather conditions in the winter, only one operating in the summer months instead. After the destruction at the end of the Second World War, the route was served to the Brocken again until the 14th May 1949. Starting in 1950, the station was approached even in winter, it was used not only for winter sports; in July 1960 90.000 passengers were counted.

The inner German border between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 was in close proximity to the west at the foot of the Brocken. As of August 14, 1961 - after the beginning of construction of the Wall in Berlin - the public train traffic was stopped and locked the chunk for the civilian population. The Brocken Railway was now exclusively for military purposes. The mountain was also later surrounded at an altitude line north of Schierke with a wall that even once summit of the Brocken. The Brocken Railway Station was then used by the border troops of the GDR. Until 1987 reached material goods trains the station, then the train service ended on chunks due to poor track conditions.

After the political changes the border fortifications and military installations were from 1990 phased out, the last Russian soldiers left the Brocken on 30 March 1994. After the simultaneous restoration of the ailing railway tracks followed in July 1992, the reopening of the Brocken Railway and since then the Brocken station again serves its original purpose, as a station for tourists.

Equipment

The station building is a restaurant as well as a ticket and souvenir sales the Harz narrow gauge railways is housed. The station is currently served in the regular service of steam locomotive hauled trains only the Harz narrow gauge railways and has mainly a tourist function.
