Broglie (Eure)

Broglie [ brogli ] is a commune with 1098 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure in the Haute-Normandie region. It is capital of the canton Broglie and its local association Canton de Broglie.

Geography

The community Broglie is in the north of the Pays d' Ouche in the Valley of Charentonne flowing over the Risle into the Seine. Broglie is located about ten kilometers from Bernay and about fifty kilometers from Évreux.

History

Until 1742 the town was named Chambrais.

Broglie is of Celtic origin and was in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD) at the junction of Roman roads of the salt and iron trade.

After the Norman invasion the town was owned by the Dukes of Normandy. In 1071 William the Conqueror gave ( 1027/28-1087 ) Henri de Ferrieres († 1093-1100 ), the feud Chambrais. The Ferrieres family remained until the 16th century in the possession of the fief.

1716 reached the village in the possession of the Broglie family from Piedmont. In 1742 it was raised to a duchy and in honor of the Duke François -Marie de Broglie ( 1671-1745 ) renamed Broglie. During the French Revolution (1789-1799) the renaming was reversed. 1793 received Broglie Chambray the status of a municipality and 1801 as Chambrois the right to local self-government. Only since 1814, the place is called again Broglie. 1845, the former municipality of Saint -Vincent- la -Rivière was incorporated.

Gardens and Nature Monuments

The Valley of Charentonne and Guiel is classified in Broglie Site Inscrit ( natural monument ). The landscape architect Denis Comont put in a loop of Charentonne a " water garden " at the Jardin de Broglie aquatique. The garden is home to over 12,000 aquatic plants species, including Gunnera mexicana, swamp irises, Japanese Astilbe, hosta, Ziesten, geranium, record sheets, rhubarb, Ranunculaceae, lobelia, reeds, rush and bamboo plants.

Structures

The church Saint -Martin was built in the second part of the 11th century under Henri II de Ferrieres. The southern part was built by Jean IV de Ferrieres in the 15th century. The church was classified as a monument historique in 1862 ( historic monument '). Several windows of the church are also classified as a historical monument, it dates from the 16th century and was restored in 1896. Left of the main altar hangs a painting by Georges de la Tour (1593-1652), it represents the Saint Sebastian represents, which is rescued by two " Holy Women ".

The Castle of Broglie dates from the 11th century, but was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was in 1972 entered in the register of historical monuments addition and is in private ownership.

On the D170 between Broglie and Courteilles is the former church of Saint -Vincent, Saint- Vincent- la- Rivière, the interior of which was painted by the publican and Sunday painter Irial Vets modeled after Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It was sold to the Association of Municipalities, parts of furniture are in the church of Saint -Martin. It is now used as a private chapel.

Economy

The municipal area controlled designation of origin (AOC ) for Pont -l'Évêque cheese, calvados and pommeau ( pommeau de Normandie ) and protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Pork ( Porc de Normandie), poultry ( Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( apply Cidre de Normandie and cider normand ).

Personalities

  • Simon Arnauld de Pomponne (* 1618 in Paris, † 1699), minister of Louis XIV, the construction of the castle resumed.
  • Victor- François de Broglie (1718-1804), military leader and statesman, Marshal of France.
  • Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788-1827), a physicist. His uncle Léonor Mérimée, the father of Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) was also born in Broglie, he was a painter.
