Origin and History

The Broholmers takes its name from the castle Broholm on the Danish island of Funen. Physically he stands between the Danes and the Mastiff. He worked as Saupacker, as blowing dog who drove his cattle to the markets, as guardians of castles and large estates. Several times he had reached the limit to his downfall, but again and found lovers that adopted the breed. 1940, the last dog was entered in the breed register. After the Second World War the breed was considered extinct. Due to a publication, the breed was rediscovered in 1974: Outside the official dog world he had been scattered bred, but without the blessing of the breed associations. With suitable animals of this "wild" breeding the breed register was opened again. In 1982, the race had come again stabilized, that the FCI recognized the Broholmers. Even today, the breed back program is not yet complete.
