Pentafluoride is an interhalogen compound consisting of the elements fluorine and bromine.
Production and representation
Pentafluoride can be produced by the reaction of bromine with fluorine.
Properties
Bromine pentafluoride is a colorless, fuming strongly in the air, pungent smelling liquid, which decomposes in water and almost all materials attacking. With organic compounds, the reaction is very violent in part, possibly explosive. The substance itself is not flammable though, but reacts strongly with such combustible materials that may no ignition source for a fire is needed, and existing fires are strongly encouraged. Dry glass is attacked slowly at ordinary temperature, fused silica practically not at all.
Use
Pentafluoride is used in inorganic chemistry for the fluorination.
Safety
Bromine pentafluoride is toxic, oxidising, causes burns, it should be stored cool and dry.
