Brontallo

Brontallo is a fraction of the municipality in the district of Lavizzara Lavizzara, in the district of Valle Maggia the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The formerly independent municipality Brontallo was merged on April 4, 2004 the former municipalities Broglio, Fusio, Menzonio, Peccia and Prato- Sornico to the municipality Lavizzara.

Geography

Brontallo lies 750 m above sea level. M. on a rocky sun terrace at the foot of a cliff of Pizzo di Brünesc. The first village in Lavizzara is on the right side of the valley. The steep hillsides are terraced with dry stone walls in a total length of 22 km. This allows for the agricultural use and prevents the rain and melt water runs off too quickly. The houses were stepped terrace on a slope. Homes and the east -scale stables were separated to protect the residents of landslides in the zone Il Sasso della Catena.

History

Until the beginning of the 15th century Brontallo and Menzonio formed a community as well as with Bignasco and Cavergno a neighborhood. The 1496 mentioned church of Santa Maria and San Giorgio - the facade is a huge painting of St. Christopher - 1653 newly built and then restored several times. Until 1513 it formed together with Menzonio part of the parish Cevio from which it broke away in 1655. The ossuary shows frescoes from the 16th century.

Population

In 1669 there were 227 inhabitants; 1795: 90; 1850: 173; 1900: 133; 1950: 92; 2000: 50th Meanwhile, there was - contrary to the general trend in this region - to a halt the population decline. 2006 lived in Brontallo again 60 people, including 15 children.

Economy

The population has been engaged traditionally agricultural and pastoral economy. The connecting road into the Val Lavizzara down was not completed until 1955. 1990 one-third of the workforce was only engaged in agriculture. Of the 50 residents in 2000 were two persons in agriculture, five in the industry, three in the service sector and 40 inactive. In 2006 there were five farms with 66 livestock units (LU ), mainly goats and sheep. In the village there are a greater number of second homes.

To halt the disintegration of the old agricultural structures, 1994, the club pro Brontallo was founded. With the help of donations, the population began to mend ways and to clear terraces. Old vines were renewed and set young chestnut trees. Next to the old mill and the drying house for the chestnuts, the Graà be restored. Transport and Tourism

The village can be reached by post bus from Locarno with change in Bignasco. The road created in 1955, ending just below the village in a parking lot. It is also accessible in winter.
