Brookhaven is a city (town ) in Suffolk County of the U.S. state of New York. It extends from the north to the south coast of Long Iceland and has about 472 425 inhabitants. This is not a town in the true sense, but an administrative merger of a larger, very differently populated area with no clear center.

An unincorporated hamlet (not self-administered settlement ) and census -designated place ( statistical area ) within the city also named Brookhaven.

Geography

Brookhaven is 1376.6 km ² in area, the largest city in the state of New York. The North Coast is located on Long - Iceland Sound, in the south, much of the Great South Bay is part of the urban area, so 705.1 km ² water and only 671.6 km ² land area. The offshore barrier island Iceland Fire separates the bay from the Atlantic Ocean on the free way.

The neighboring towns are Smithtown and Islip in the west and Riverhead and Southampton in the east.

  • Hamlet: Blue Point, Brookhaven, Calverton, Center Moriches, Centereach, Coram, East Moriches, East Patchogue, East Setauket, East Shoreham, Eastport, Farmingville, Fire Iceland Pines, Gordon Heights, Holbrook, Holtsville, Lake Ronkonkoma, Manorville, Mastic, Mastic Beach, Medford, Middle Iceland, Miller Place, Moriches, Mount Sinai, North Bellport, North Patchogue, Port Jefferson Station, Ridge, Rocky Point, Selden, Setauket, Shirley, sound Beach, Stony Brook, Terryville, Yaphank. There is also the Poospatuck Indian Reservation with 271 inhabitants ( 2004).

History

In the present territory of Brookhaven originally lived various tribes of Indians Metoac. As the first European settlement was founded in 1655 today Setauket in the north under the name Ashford. Through the so-called Nicolls patent dated March 7, 1666, the name Brookhaven was first written for the larger area, recognition as a city or town was 1788. Until 1789, the city government was in Setauket, was then moved to Coram and later on to Medford.

In previous centuries, most of the settlements of Brookhaven's agriculture, fishing and shipbuilding lived. In the 20th century urbanized some places, others developed into sparsely populated residential areas.

Education and Science

Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the largest research institutes in the United States, which is known for its particle accelerator RHIC. At Brookhaven area is also the main campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Infrastructure

In part to Brookhaven, partly to Islip belonging Ronkonkoma is the Long Iceland MacArthur Airport ( ISP) airport. The railway lines in the Long Iceland Railroad from Penn Station to Port Jefferson, Greenport ( Ronkonkoma branch ) and Montauk and Long Iceland Expressway ( Interstate 495) pass through the city. From Port Jefferson is a ferry to Bridgeport in Connecticut.
