Brookings County, South Dakota

History

The history of the county began with a law of 1862, which established the boundaries of the newly formed county from parts of Moody, Kingsbury and Lake counties. The County was named after Wilmot Brookings (1830-1905), the first provisional governor of the Dakota Territory before its official founding in 1861.

In 1871, the first managers were authorized for the County by the government of North Dakota set up an administration. The first county seat was then Medary.

In 1873 the area was again reduced in size and created the still valid limits of Brookings County.
