Brooks County (Georgia)

The Brooks County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Quitman.

Geography

The County is located in southern Georgia on the northern border of the U.S. state of Florida and has an area of ​​1289 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Cook County, Lowndes County, Thomas County and Colquitt County.

History

The County was formed on December 11, 1858 from parts of Lowndes County and Thomas County. It was named for Preston Brooks, a politician and member of the House of Representatives of the United States. The first settlers were Spanish missionaries, who settled in 1570 by Florida coming here. During the American Civil War, the County of the main food supplier, and was given the name Bread Basket of the South. The first courthouse was built in 1864.
