Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God

The Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God (Latin: Ordo Sancti Joannis de Deo Hospitalarius, religious symbol OH) are a Catholic nursing order, as the Order of the Holy Father John of God is true.

The Brothers of Charity are mostly lay people who still take the vows of Hospitality besides the three vows (poverty, obedience, celibacy ).

History

Provinces

The headquarters ( Generalate ) is located in Rome. The Order is increasingly active in 53 countries around the world in the health and care of the elderly, the disabled, the homeless and care in recent years in hospice work and palliative care.

In German-speaking, there are two Provinces:

  • Bavarian province of the order ( based in Munich)
  • Austrian province of the order ( based in Vienna)

Germany

The Bavarian province of the order is considered a pioneer of hospice care in Bavaria. It was founded in 1851 by Father Magnobonus Mark Miller in Neuburg an der Donau, who was also her first Provincial. Bavaria's first palliative care unit located since 1991 at the Hospital of the Brothers of Charity in Munich. In Regensburg, the Brothers of Charity operate the largest religious hospital in Germany.

Austria

The Hospital Brothers of Mercy hospital in Vienna Leopoldstadt was founded in 1614 by Brother Gabriel Ferrara in Milan and received permission in 1625 to guide a pharmacy. They came at the request of the Prince of Liechtenstein, which was cultivated in Italy by religious. Both institutions still exist today.

1757 saw the establishment of another hospital on Schiller Square in Linz. 1789 was moved to abandonment of the Carmelite convent in the Herrngasse the Convent of Mercy Hospital brothers there.

To celebrate 350 years in Austria a stamp issued by the Austrian Post.

In 2000 (2nd district) was named the hospital Hospitallers of St. John of God - place after the founder of the Order in Vienna Leopoldstadt.
