The Civil Parish consists of the parts of Great Broughton and Little Broughton and the bordering Broughton Cross, the former station on the Cockermouth and Workington Railway. Great Broughton had 1879-1908 a station of the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway. Until 1992 there was the Navy ammunition depot Broughton Moor, which was attached to its closure on the last still operating track section of the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway.
