Brown County (Illinois)

The Brown County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had .. inhabitants and a population density of 8.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mount Sterling.

Geography

The County is located in western Illinois and has an area of 796 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. The eastern boundary runs along the Illinois River, the northeast along the Lamoine River. At the Brown County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Brown County was formed on February 1, 1839, from parts of Schuyler County. It was named after Jacob Brown (1775-1828), a general who fought in the War of 1812 and was honored for his achievements with the Gold Medal of Honor.

On March 8, 1839 all incorporated documents were destroyed by fire. The first school was established in 1852.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Brown County 6,937 people in 2,148 households. The population density was 8.8 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 76.1 percent white, 18.5 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity was 5.8 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 2,148 households lived statistically 2.09 per person.

16.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 71.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years or older. 35.9 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 42,134. The per capita income was $ 16,866. 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
