Brown House, Munich

Brown House was the name of the building from 1930 to 1945 existing party headquarters of the NSDAP in Munich, Briennerstraße 45

History

Situated between Caroline and Königsplatz house was built in 1828 by Jean Baptiste Métivier in Biedermeier style. It came in 1877 in the ownership of the British industrialist Willy Barlow. His widow sold the property for 805 864 gold mark on 26 May 1930 the NSDAP after their rooms at Schellingstrasse had become too small 50. Until the takeover by the Nazi Party, the building was known as " Palais Barlow " or " mansions ". " Brown House " was the official name of the party house. The money for the purchase by the NSDAP came from the industrialist Fritz Thyssen.

After major renovations, with those of the Munich architect Paul Ludwig Troost was commissioned, and their designs were handled by Adolf Hitler himself, the entire national leadership of the NSDAP was moved at the beginning of 1931 there.

The building was largely destroyed in 1945 and its ruin finally demolished in 1947. The land remained undeveloped until 2012.

Documentation Centre

On 6 December 2005 the Bavarian cabinet decided to establish on the site of a National Socialist Documentation Center about National Socialism decided. The groundbreaking ceremony should take place in 2008. However, the funding was delayed. There were also different views on substantive issues. In June 2009 an agreement between the city of Munich, the Free State of Bavaria and the covenant was made, which provides for the reimbursement in the amount of 28.2 million euros in equal parts. Construction began in 2011; the foundation stone was laid on 9 March 2012, the documentation center to be completed in 2014.
