Brown-Swiss

The Brown Swiss breed of cattle is mainly grown in North America (USA and Canada).

Already in the 18th and 19th century animals of the brown cattle from Switzerland were imported to North America. In the U.S., the new breed Brown Swiss (German Brown Swiss ) was grown with high milk yield and low fat content from these animals.

After 1960, Brown Swiss cattle have been crossed into the breed Brown Swiss in Europe to increase their size and milk yield and thereby improve profitability.

In the 1980s, the breed was crossed into the Red Danish Dairy Cattle.

Since the 1980s, the Brown Swiss breed in North America is on the steady decline. This is due to the competition of the Holstein cattle, which has a higher milk yield.
