Brownsville is a city in Cameron County in the U.S. state of Texas. The city lies on the Rio Grande, across from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Brownsville is the county seat of administration ( county seat ) of the Cameron County and the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and the seat of the Diocese of Brownsville.

Geography

The city lies at the southernmost tip of Texas, the U.S. Highways 77 and 83 has a total area of 215 km ², of which 6.8 km ² water surface are.

History

Brownsville was founded on January 13, 1849 by Charles Stillman. On December 8, 1911, the " Brownsville & Matamoros Bridge" was opened, connecting the two border cities. 2001 Brownsville was declared an All-America City.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 139 722 people in 38 174 households, and 32,180 families. The population density was 671.0 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 7.32 % White, 0.41 % African American, 0.42 % Native American, 0.54 % Asian and 0.03% of residents from the Pacific Island region. 91.28 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 38 174 households 50.1 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 % were married couples living together. 20.9% were single mothers and 15.7 % were non-families. 13.7 % of all households were single-person households and 6.7 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.62 and the average family size was 3.99 persons to.

34.6 % of the population were under 18 years old, 11.2 % from 18 to 24, 27.5 % 25-44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 28 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 82.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,468, and the median income for a family $ 26,186. Males have a median income of $ 21,739 versus $ 17,116 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,762. 36.0 % of the population and 32.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 45.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 31.0 % of those 65 or older.
