Bruce Arena

Bruce Arena ( born September 21, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American football coach.

Playing career

Bruce Arena grew up on Long Iceland in New York. In high school, he began to play football because it was too small for football. He began as a defender and later as a goalkeeper.

In college, he continued to play football but also lacrosse. After two years on the Nassau Community College, he moved to Cornell University. There he played lacrosse and football.

After graduating from Cornell Arena was first committed by the New York Cosmos. He never came there but used. He played professional lacrosse with the Montreal Quebecois and professional football in the Tacoma Tides of the American Soccer League.

In 1973 he had his only game. He came on in the second half against Israel.

Coaching career

Arena began his coaching career at the University of Puget Sound, where he was active in 1976. From 1978 to 1995, he coached the Virginia Cavaliers, the selection team of the University of Virginia.

Then arena was a year coach of the U.S. U -23, before he moved to the newly founded Major League Soccer for DC United, with whom he won the championship in his first year.

Bruce Arena took over in late October 1998, after the weak performance of the U.S. national team at the 1998 World Cup in France, the post of national coach.

He formed from many individual players a unit and led the United States at the 2002 World Cup to the World Cup quarter-finals, where she retired against Germany. During his time as coach, he was also able to integrate many young players in the national team, including several players he knew from the quality team from the University of Virginia.

Bruce Arena was able to qualify with the U.S. national team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where the team was eliminated, however, already in the first round. U.S. soccer federation chief Sunil Gulati was in New York on 14 July 2006, a week after the Football World Cup 2006, announced that he would not renew the contract with Bruce Arena.

A few days later Arena accepted an offer from the New York Red Bulls.

On 5 November 2007, the Red Bulls Arena and parted by mutual consent. Bruce Arena was one and a half years head coach of the club. He made it in his time there to 16 wins, 16 draws and 10 defeats.

Since 18 August 2008 Arena is coach of Los Angeles Galaxy.
