Bruce C. Berndt

Bruce Carl Berndt ( born March 13, 1939 in St. Joseph, Missouri) is an American mathematician who is engaged in analysis and number theory and is known as the editor of Notebooks of Ramanujan.

Berndt studied at Albion College (Bachelor 1961) and in 1966 at the University of Wisconsin -Madison at J. Roderick Smart doctorate ( Identities Involving the coefficients of Dirichletseries ). 1966/67, he was at the University of Glasgow. After that he was is at the University of Illinois at Urbana / Champaign, where he was 1967 Assistance Professor and from 2006 " Michio Suzuki Distinguished Research Professor of Mathematics ." In 1973/74 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Over 20 years Berndt dedicated in 1977 the publication of Ramanujan's notebooks (5 volumes). Ramanujan gave no evidence for his discoveries, which therefore by Berndt and colleagues ( as George Andrews, Richard Askey ) resupplied or were sought in the literature. Overall, in the notebooks around 3000 to 4000 " allegations " without proof. In his work, he could fall back on the notes by GN Watson and BM Wilson in England, who had already started a project in the 1930s to publish the journals.

Berndt is also one of the editors of the Ramanujan Journal. In 1995 he also published Ramanujan's letters ( with Richard Rankin ).

In 1996 he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his publication of Ramanujan's notebooks. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
