Bruce Mather

James Bruce Mather ( born May 9, 1939 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a Canadian composer.

Mather studied from 1952 to 1957 at the Royal Conservatory of Music and then to 1959 at the University of Toronto with Alberto Guerrero, Earle Moss and Alexander Uninsky piano and Godfrey Ridout, Oskar Morawetz and John Weinzweig music theory and composition. With a grant from the Canada Council, he studied until 1961 at the Conservatoire de Paris with Darius Milhaud composition, Simone Plé - Caussade counterpoint, analysis with Olivier Messiaen and Lazare Lévy piano. During the Darmstadt Summer Courses 1961 he came into contact with Pierre Boulez.

After studying composition at Stanford University with Leland Smith and Roy Harris to 1964 he returned to Canada, where he first taught at the Brodie School of Music and Modern Dance and the University of Toronto and from 1966 to 2001 at McGill University. Here he headed from 1986 to 1996 a company specializing in contemporary music chamber ensemble. 1975-1976 and 1978-1979, he taught as a visiting professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. Among his pupils were John Burke, Paul Crawford, Jacques Desjardins, Anthony Genge, Richard Hunt, Denis Lorrain, John Oliver, François Rose, Donald and Steven Alexander Tilley.

Mather began in early childhood to compose and received in 1949 a prize of Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada ( CAPAC ). His incurred while studying in Paris Cycle Rilke was sent by the French broadcasting. In 1965, the Symphonic Ode, 1969 Madrigal II and 1970, listed the Sonata for Two Pianos at the International Rostrum of Composers. Under the influence of his friend Ivan Wyschnegradsky originated from 1974 microtonal compositions like Sassicaia, Poème du délire, Señorio de Sarria and Tempranillo.

In 1979 he won with Musique pour Champigny first time the Jules Léger Prize, which was awarded in 1993 again for the work Yquem. 2000 awarded him the Émile Nelligan Foundation from his life's work with the Serge Garant Prize.

As a pianist, Fox played solo or in a duo with his wife Pierrette LePage a series of premieres of contemporary compositions.
