Bruchem

Bruchem is a village in the county of Bommelerwaard and part of the municipality of Zaltbommel in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Bruchem counts 1648 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009). Until 1999 was Bruchem part of the community Kerkwijk which was incorporated into Zaltbommel 1999.

The name Bruchem consists of two parts: bruc and hem. Bruc ( nnl. broek ) corresponds to the German break and swamp forests and refers to a swampy forest. Hem is derived from home and referred to as in English a ' living space '.

Bruchem is built on the raised ridge or edge of a riverside ( nl. stroomrug ), which runs straight through the Bommelerwaard and what are also Kerkwijk and Delwijnen. This increased back was along the river ' de Alm ', which silted up Bommelerwaard before 1200.

Worth seeing is the Reformed Church ( Hervormde kerk nl. ), probably from the 13th century, most likely with a 14th- century choir. The church was expanded from approximately 250 to approximately 400 seats in 2005/2006.
