Brucheville

Brucheville is a commune of 146 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Sainte- Mère -Église.

Geography

Brucheville is on the Cotentin peninsula in the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin, 5.1 km southwest of Utah Beach, 30 kilometers north- west of Saint- Lô and 8.1 kilometers northeast of Carentan. The river Escalgrain that Douve and Greves pass through the municipality. The village is a scattered settlement.

History

The 101st Airborne Division landed on 6th June 1944 north of Carentan. South of Brucheville the American troops encountered resistance, yet they took on the night of 6 to 7 June Brucheville and taught there a temporary airfield one, the 36th Fighter Group (36th fighter group ) of 5 to 27 August 1944 served as a base. On 5 September 1944 the airfield was closed. There in 1990 a monument to the 36th fighter group was established.

Attractions

The Mairie ( mayor ) of Brucheville was built in the 17th century.

The parish church of Saint- Hilaire was built in the 12th century, from the time the nave and bell tower have been preserved. The western portal was created in the 14th century, the door in the bell tower bears the year 1617th In the first half of the 18th century the nave was restored. In 1954 the church was partially classified as a monument historique (historic monument). At the cemetery, the church is a cemetery crucifix from the 15th century.

Economy

The image of the church is dominated by pastures and fields. Major lines of business are in Brucheville feed production and breeding of domestic cattle and domestic sheep.
