Brumby

Brumby is an Australian feral horse, similar to the American Mustangs. They are descended from domesticated horses and riding horses, which were released after the gold rush in the mid-19th century. The horses can reach a EUR 1.35 up to 1.50 m in Height. Brumbies are considered hardy, agile, fast and wild.

The first imported to Australia horses were Cape horses from South Africa, then horses from South America came ( probably the Chilean Corralero ) into the country. Still later Timorponies imported from Indonesia and various British pony and draft horse breeds as well as numerous thoroughbred and Arabian horses. Traces of all these breeds are found in the Australian wild horse population.

Although they occur in many regions of the continent, the best-known brumbies in the area of the Snowy Mountains are located in South Western Australia. However, most living in the Northern Territory, the second largest population exists in Queensland. In Australia there are more wild horses than in any other country.

Brumbies multiply so fast that they are now regarded as pests. Therefore, we tried to keep by shooting down the stock is limited. Rarely, individual animals are captured, tamed and used as riding or work horse.

The term " Brumby " is usually attributed to Sergeant James Brumby, who left his horses when he gave up his estate in 1804 in Mulgrave Place / New South Wales, and emigrated to Tasmania. Banjo Paterson defined in the introduction to his poem " Brumby 's Run ", published in the Bulletin in 1894 ( Sydney ), the term as the name for the Australian wild horse. A letter in the Sydney Morning Herald from 1896 again asserts, " baroombie " is the word for horse in the language of the indigenous people along the rivers Balonne, Nebine, Warrego and Bulloo (South Queensland). Another derivation goes back to " Baramba ", the name of a river or a ranch in the Queenslander district Burnett, founded in the 1840s and later abandoned, with many of the horses escaped. Furthermore, the name of the Irish word has been associated " Bromach " ( colt ).

After the horses Brumbies Rugby Union team is named from Canberra.
