Brunonids

The Brunonen were a Saxon noble family from the 10th to the 11th century.

To the royal house of the Salian were close family ties. Count I. Brun came after the death of Emperor Otto III. 1002 unsuccessfully as a candidate for the royal throne on. In 1067, Egbert I. was invested by King Henry IV with the Margraviate of Meissen. His son Egbert II was opposed against Emperor Henry IV and lost by the spell of a princely court his fief Meissen and Frisian counties. With him the Brunonen died out in the male line in 1090. Ekbert II Sister Gertrude the Younger of Brunswick, was married in second marriage with Henry the fats of Northeim. Their daughter Richenza († 1141 ) married Lothar von Süpplingenburg, Duke of Saxony and later emperors. Their daughter Gertrude of Saxony († 1143 ) was married to Duke Henry the Proud of Bavaria and Saxony, whereby the ownership of Brunswick arrived for centuries to the Guelphs.
