Bryan County (Oklahoma)

The Bryan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. In the census in 2010, the County had 42 416 inhabitants and a population density of 18 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Durant, which was named after Dickson Durant.

History

The Bryan County was formed on 16 July 1907 as the original County of Choctaw country. It was named after William Jennings Bryan, an American lawyer, statesman, and politician. The settlement began in 1843 with the construction of Fort Washita and the first post office was opened on 4 November 1844. In 1872 the first railway line of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad was built through the county.
