Bryan Davies, Baron Davies of Oldham

Bryan Davies, Baron Davies of Oldham, PC ( born November 9, 1939) is a Labour member of the British House of Lords. He works for the government as deputy leader in the House of Lords from 2003 to 2010 and as usual in this position, he was also Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard.

Life and career

He studied at the High School in Redditch Worcestershire. The University College London, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1961. The Institute of Education (PGCE 1962) and at the London School of Economics, he graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from.

He worked from 1962 to 1965 as a history teacher at The Latymer School, after which he worked as a lecturer in history and social sciences from 1965 to 1974 at Middlesex University, Enfield. During this time he also worked as a union official at the National Association for Teachers in Further and Higher Education in the ( NATFHE ). Since 1979 he has been a member of the Transport and General Workers ' Union.

He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Enfield North from February 1974 to 1979, he lost his seat to the Conservatives Timothy Eggar. Davies works as MP for Oldham Central and Royton from 1992 until the seat was abolished by boundary changes in 1997. On 3 October 1997 Davies was the noble title of Baron Davies of Oldham, awarded in Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

Davies also worked as secretary of the Parliamentary Labour Party and in the shadow cabinet of 1979 until 1992. He also works as a member of the Medical Research Council from 1977 to 1979 and was chairman of the Further Education Funding Council from 1998 to 2000. In 2006 he was elected a member of the Privy Council appointed.
