Bryan Helmer

Bryan Helmer ( born July 15, 1972 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defender, who stands in January 2011 at the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League contract.

Career

Bryan Helmer played during his junior period from 1989 to 1993 in unterklassigen Canadian junior leagues. Although he had denied at this time only six games in the Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls, the ungedrafete defender before the start of season 1993/94 of the Albany River Rats, for he 1993 to 1998 a total of five years in which it was American Hockey League played, obliged.

While he was engaged by the New Jersey Devils as a free agent on July 10, 1994, however, he never played for the team. On 17 July 1998, the Phoenix Coyotes took him also as a free agent contract. On the 19th of December of the same year he was given because of exceeding the salary cap to the St. Louis Blues. After two years in St. Louis, the defender received a contract with the Vancouver Canucks. For Vancouver, he played in the season 2002 / 03 is the first and only time in the playoffs for the Stanley Cup. In exchange for Martin Grenier of Canadians was issued on 25 July 2003 at his former club Phoenix Coyotes. Since he incurred a shoulder injury in training camp, he missed most of the season 2003/04.

In summer 2004, Helmer was committed by the Detroit Red Wings. During the lockout in the 2004/ 05 NHL season, he played for the farm team of the American Hockey League, the Grand Rapids Griffins, for which he was active even after the resumption of the NHL game mode. After he had played in his two years in Detroit never for their NHL team, the defender was for the third time committed in the summer of 2006 by the Phoenix Coyotes. However, he played the following two years, again exclusively in the AHL for their farm team, the San Antonio Rampage.

In summer 2008, Helmer signed a contract with the farm team of the Washington Capitals, the Hershey Bears of the AHL. After he started the season 2008/ 09 with the Bears, he was due to several serious violations committed on 28 November 2008 by the Capitals and dismissed from the team the Hershey Bears. In the seasons 2008/ 09 and 2009/10, he won the Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears. Then his contract with the Capitals, however, was not extended. In January 2011, he signed a contract with the Oklahoma City Barons.

A few days later, he scored three points in the 7-2 win over the Peoria Rivermen and broke the four -year-old record for most points scorer of a defender, John Slaney had previously held. In his 986th game of the regular season in the American Hockey League Helmer reached his 520th point scorer, outperforming Slaney, who had brought it in the AHL at 519 points in 631 games of the regular season. Even before the end of season 2010/11 reached Helmer another milestone in his career and played as only the seventh player in the history of his 1000th AHL game in the regular season.
